GPT-5 vs Claude Opus — A Practical Comparison for Designers and Developers

February 5, 2026 · 7 min read

Every day someone asks me: "What's the best AI to use?" And the answer — like most things in design — depends.

In this article I'll compare GPT-5 (OpenAI's latest model) and Claude Opus (Anthropic's most powerful model) from a practical perspective — as a designer who uses both every day.

Arabic Writing

This is the most important point for Arabic speakers. And the truth is Claude is noticeably better.

Claude understands Arabic context, can write in colloquial Egyptian dialect if you ask, and knows the difference between formal and colloquial Arabic. GPT-5 has improved a lot over GPT-4 but still occasionally produces "translation-style" sentences that feel unnatural.

Winner: Claude

Code Writing

Both are excellent at code. But there is an important difference:

  • GPT-5 excels at being fast and direct — it gives you the code and moves on
  • Claude excels at understanding the full context of a project — meaning if you have a large codebase, Claude reads all of it and writes code consistent with what already exists

For a small script, GPT-5 works well. For building a full project, Claude is better.

Winner: Tie (depending on use case)

Design and UI

Here Claude takes the round clearly for two reasons:

  1. Figma MCP — Claude can read Figma files directly and convert designs to code
  2. Claude Code — it can build a complete UI from a text description

GPT-5 has DALL-E for images and Canvas for writing code, but there is no direct Figma integration.

Winner: Claude

Context Window

  • GPT-5: 128,000 tokens
  • Claude Opus: 200,000 tokens

This difference matters when working on large projects. Claude can read more files and retain a larger context.

Winner: Claude

Price

  • ChatGPT Plus: $20/month (with GPT-5 access)
  • Claude Pro: $20/month (with Opus access)

Exactly the same price. The difference is in usage limits — Claude gives you more messages on Opus.

Winner: Tie

Speed

GPT-5 is faster in response — especially smaller models like GPT-5 Mini. Claude Opus is slightly slower but compensates with higher quality.

If speed matters more to you, GPT-5. If quality matters more, Claude.

Winner: GPT-5

My Personal Opinion

I use both — but if I had to pick just one, it would be Claude.

The reason is simple: I am a designer who builds websites. Claude Code + Figma MCP gives me a workflow that does not exist in any other tool. I write my ideas and they get turned into real websites.

Final Advice

Do not be loyal to one tool. AI evolves at a crazy pace — what is best today might be second tomorrow. What matters most is that you learn to use AI in your work, not that you pick a team.
