Egypt and the Arab World: AI Opportunities and Threats in the Labor Market

July 15, 2025 · 8 min read

When we talk about AI's impact on the labor market, most reports talk about the US and Europe. But for us in Egypt and the Arab world — the situation is different.

We have unique opportunities and real threats.

The Threats

1. Outsourcing Is at Risk

Egypt and the Arab region were important outsourcing destinations — especially in customer service and data entry. AI is removing this type of work.

2. A Larger Skills Gap

Our universities are slower to update. The skills gap between what the market demands and what education provides is larger.

3. Infrastructure

The internet is slower, devices are relatively more expensive, and access to AI tools is sometimes harder.

The Opportunities

1. A Huge Underserved Arab Market

400 million people speak Arabic — and AI tools in Arabic are still weak. Anyone who builds Arabic AI tools will find a massive market.

2. Arabic Content

The Arabic internet is poor in content compared to English. AI makes it easier to create high-quality Arabic content.

3. The Cost Advantage

The cost of living is lower — meaning you can build a startup at a much lower cost than Silicon Valley.

4. The UAE as an AI Hub

The UAE is investing heavily in AI — the MGX fund in the Stargate project is an example. This opens up opportunities for the entire region.

5. Youth

More than 60% of the region's population is under 30. Youth + technology = opportunity.

What Is Needed?

At the Government Level

  • Investment in digital infrastructure
  • Updating educational curricula
  • Incentives for tech companies

At the Individual Level

  • Learn AI alongside any specialization
  • Think about building products for the Arabic market
  • Leverage the language and cultural advantage

Conclusion

The Arab region can be a winner from the AI wave if people and governments act. We have unique advantages — we must leverage them before it's too late.
